Annual African Conference on Social Entrepreneurship Launches First-Ever Academic Track

In May 2024, the Academia Forum at the 7th Annual African Conference on Social Entrepreneurship (AACOSE) showcased 15 educators among 38 submissions, promoting collaboration between academia and social enterprises. Launched in May 2023, the Africa Academic Hub initiated this forum to highlight innovative research and partnerships.

Speakers, including Dr. Crespen Ndlovu from the University of the Free State, emphasised initiatives like Enactus to enhance human development through student-led social entrepreneurship in South African higher education. Other discussions highlighted integrating digital tools to create interactive learning environments and leveraging AI, MR, VR, and AR for educational innovation. Research on the core competencies for social entrepreneurs that should be taught in the classroom was presented by members of Catalyst 2030 Tam Nguyen, Debbi Brock and Ruikun Geng.
The closing ceremony keynote speaker was Dr. Vincent Ogutu, Vice Chancellor of Strathmore University and Catalyst 2030 member. Dr. Ogutu’s address encapsulated the spirit of the conference and the unwavering determination of social entrepreneurs. The conference, with over 50 speakers from diverse sectors, underscored the pivotal role of young leaders in sustainable development. Participants stressed the urgency of preparing youth as current leaders shaping innovation and social impact.

Overall, the AACOSE Academia Forum forged a network committed to advancing sustainable development through education and entrepreneurship, empowering youth as leaders shaping Africa’s future. Reflecting on the event, one participant noted: “Youths are not merely the leaders of tomorrow but the leaders of today, and the future of Africa is in their hands.”
