Novartis in India

At Novartis, we are committed to sustainable development. As a global organization, we believe we have a great responsibility and an even greater opportunity to create positive social change. CSR for Novartis in India is an extension of these philosophies.

Globally, one of our ESG goals is to achieve water neutrality by 2030, a commitment that is a fundamental pillar of the CSR strategy at Novartis in India. We also have several flagship health programs focusing on neglected diseases in underserved communities, such as leprosy.

Our strategy revolves around having a community-first approach, driving long-term holistic impact, and forging strong partnerships.

Our flagship programs include:

Integrated watershed management project (SDGs 3, 5, 6, 8, and 15)

The Watershed Development Project in Telangana aligns with the global mission of Novartis to achieve water neutrality by 2030.

We identified that there are several water-stressed communities in Telangana which depend on agriculture as their primary source of income. Many of them are stuck in a vicious cycle. The inability to access water impacts their ability to earn income which further impacts their access to water. This is the problem we set out to solve. The project is executed by National Agro Foundation.

The project has water at its core and the communities at the heart. While water sustainability is a primary focus, the project takes a holistic approach to address multiple dimensions of community development.

Our project has adopted a 360° sustainability model of support which includes:

  • Building water resources to increase supply
  • Teaching farmers water optimization techniques
  • Promoting economic growth via agriculture and microfinancing small women owned businesses
  • Enhancing community wellbeing with sanitation and improved school infrastructure.

We have been able to neutralize 100% of our water consumption while impacting 11000 lives. Through this project, water storage capacity worth 260014 m3 and 10000+ trees have been planted. The local community has seen a 10% increase in income, improved health, leading to a happier, healthier community overall.

Rehabilitation of people affected by Leprosy (SDG 3)

Through our CSR initiatives we have been on a journey to champion sustainable livelihoods for people affected by leprosy. The project is executed by The Leprosy Mission Trust of India.

Recognizing India’s significant burden of leprosy, we realized the importance of bringing people affected by leprosy (either directly or those who come from leprosy families) back into the mainstream. This project provides certified vocational skill-building, soft skills training, on-the-job experiences and set up Self Help Groups (SHGs), with an aim to empower the affected individuals with opportunities for rehabilitation and livelihood advancements.

The project has directly impacted nearly 300 individuals, creating a positive ripple effect on their families. Our goal is not only to foster inclusion but also to challenge stereotypes associated with this condition.
