Dharaa Livelihood Initiative

Forest-dependent communities in India harvest a range of wild resources. While some of it is for subsistence, a large part of Minor Forest Products (MFP) collections contributes to their income. Market fluctuations and uncertainties mark the trail of MFP demand and sales in town markets. Forest Post helps assert value to forest produce through engaging with MFP gatherers in tribal communities and bringing together women’s groups trained in value-addition. We incentivise forgotten MFPs and procure at fair prices from harvesters, after discussing traditional harvest protocol and conservation priorities. A sustainable and inclusive value chain for at least eight unconventional Minor Forest Produce has today provided economic opportunity to over 80 members belonging to five different indigenous communities. The approach is such that communities can assert Forest Rights and fetch fair prices for their seasonal produce.
