Empower People (EP)
I am Shafiqur Rahman Khan, an activist and founder of Empower People, a grassroots organization working to combat bride trafficking and gender-based violence in India. My journey in social change began at the age of 13 in the tribal belt of Bihar, where I witnessed hunger, exploitation, and institutional apathy firsthand. These early experiences shaped my commitment to justice and pushed me to move from political activism to community-driven social transformation.
In 1999, I started the Career Development Corner (CDC) to support the education of marginalized youth a small initiative that later evolved into Empower People in 2006. Over the years, my work has focused on a rights-based, survivor-centric approach that challenges the traditional rescue-only model of anti-trafficking. Instead, I have prioritized building leadership among survivors, engaging communities, and strengthening local systems to address trafficking at its roots.
Through Empower People, we have rescued and supported nearly 4,000 trafficked women and girls, responded to over 25,000 cases of domestic violence, and facilitated education for more than 3,000 girls across 10 states. Our major initiatives including a 300 km march against female foeticide in 2005 and the 8,000 km March Against Bride Trafficking in 2018 mobilized communities, created national awareness, and pushed for institutional action. My work has been recognized with the 2019 Grinnell Prize, but the true measure of impact lies in the resilience of the survivors who now lead this movement.
Over the past two decades, I have learned that survivors are not passive recipients of support they are leaders, entrepreneurs, and changemakers. Initiatives such as the Azad Women Club, survivor-led enterprises, and Paro Voice (a survivor-led media movement) reflect this belief. These platforms ensure economic independence, amplify lived experiences, and transform public discourse by placing survivors at the center of decision-making and advocacy. Many women who once faced exploitation now run businesses, mentor peers, and lead community protection systems, demonstrating that empowerment is both possible and self-sustaining.
My mission is to eradicate human trafficking and honor-based crimes by empowering survivors and communities. Through education, legal support, advocacy, and livelihood programs, I aim to build systems that protect the most vulnerable and enable individuals to live with dignity, freedom, and equal opportunity.
I envision a world where every person regardless of gender, caste, or socio-economic status has the right to safety, autonomy, and a life free from exploitation. I aspire to build resilient communities that are aware, vigilant, and capable of combating trafficking from within. At the heart of this vision is the belief that sustainable social change is only possible when survivors themselves lead the movement.
