Innovation for Wellbeing Foundation
Recognizing that there is a clear and moral need for a systematic, sustained reform of mental health provision in Bangladesh, the Innovation for Wellbeing Foundation (IWF) was established in 2015 as a vehicle to introduce an integrated model of wellbeing for addressing poverty, inequality and injustice, particularly in the mental health arena. In Bangladesh, the 2019 national survey suggests that 16.8% adults and 14% children (7-17) suffer from mental illness. To put this into context, that is approximately 25 million adults and 28 million children suffering from mental illness. Compare that to around 200 psychiatrists, 50 clinical psychologists and 800 beds dedicated to mental health services in the state level. Altogether they cover only 1% of the estimated needs and the treatment is predominantly based on medical models. Despite additional mental health services provided by Non-Governmental Organizations and private clinics, the response to mental illness in Bangladesh is nowhere close to the extent needed.
IWF Vision for a society where human potentials are at optimal level in a safe, equal and enabling environment
Mission: IWF works with other stakeholders for promoting the concept of wellbeing and happiness for better health, peace and more productivity. IWF acts as a learning center for evidence based wellbeing practices at individual and institution level.
IWF’s Objectives are:
1. To raise awareness of mental health and reduce the stigma and discrimination experienced by people with mental health problems through dialogue, provision of learning opportunities and effective media and social marketing at policy and practice level. 2. To establish a therapeutic community for people living with mental health conditions functioning as a beacon of hope and optimism for a more inclusive society. 3. To design and deliver a programme of research and activities that contribute to the development of an evidence-base for culturally-appropriate community-based mental health and well-being interventions. 4. To work in collaboration with, and as an advocate for people with mental health problems to contribute to improvement in policy, laws, system and services. 5. To deliver, and support the development of an infrastructure for the delivery of community-based mental health services (including psycho-social support).
It was instrumental for replacing the Lunacy Act 1912 to Bangladesh Mental Health Act 2018, drafting National Mental Health Policy 2019 and National Mental Health Action Plan 2021-2030.
IWF is the secretariat for establishment and facilitation of the activism of Bangladesh Mental Health Network- the only platform for all stakeholders working together for promotion and protection of the mental health for all at all level.
IWF is the sole license holder for implementing the internationally accredited Mental Health First Aid program in Bangladesh.
It builds capacity of the organisations (both non-profit and for profit) for integrating mental health in their policy and programmes.
IWF facilitate formation of the association of the persons living with mental health conditions to protect and promote their rights
