Lukenya University (LU)
Lukenya University has been actively engaged with farmers through a comprehensive community outreach program since its establishment in 2015. A noteworthy initiative in their ongoing efforts is the "Ten Million Tree Initiative," which sets the ambitious goal of growing 10 million trees within a span of 10 years, translating to one million trees annually. To achieve this objective, the university organizes annual "Tree Marathons," with the inaugural event held on March 26, 2023, and the second scheduled for March 24, 2024. The primary focus of these initiatives is to raise awareness about the crucial role of tree planting in mitigating climate change. A key aspect of Lukenya University's approach is collaboration with various stakeholders, including the local community, public and private schools, churches/mosques, marketplaces, and administrative offices such as Chiefs' and Assistant Chiefs'. The involvement of the provincial administration, consisting of Chiefs, Assistant Chiefs, ward administrators, and "Nyumba Kumi" leaders responsible for overseeing 10 households each, plays a pivotal role in mobilizing and sensitizing community members in the targeted regions. To effectively implement the project, tree education is a critical component, involving efforts to sensitize the community on the importance of tree cultivation, proper tree-growing techniques, and the associated benefits. Apart from the tree initiative the University is part of the Education for Sustainable Development Centres in Kenya working closely with Africa for SDGs and KEMI. Programmes of study at the University are growing with the current offering in the School of Business and Economics, Health, Education and Social Sciences, Agriculture, Technical Studies and Natural Sciences.
