Nutrivida
According to the World Health Organization “Hidden hunger occurs when the food people eat is deficient in micronutrients such as the vitamins and minerals that they need for their growth and development. Two billion people suffer from “hidden hunger” around the world. Hunger and malnutrition are without any doubt, two of the most critical challenges we face as global community. That is probably why United Stations placed zero hunger, no poverty and good health and well-being as the top three Sustainable Development Goals.
In order to tackle this global challenge, Nutrivida was created with the commitment to “Eradicate hidden hunger in Central America and from there, hopefully the rest of the world.” Its purpose is to “nurture the world”. Nutrivida started in Costa Rica in 2013 and has expanded its operations to Nicaragua and soon to the rest of the region. Nutrivida plans to expand to the rest of Latin America and key African and Asian countries based on the Global Hunger Index. Nutrivida sells highly nutritional food products (called fortification vehicles) for a very small profit, so that as many people as possible can have access to quality food. Nutrivida is a social business inspired by Professor Muhammad Yunus. The social business started with three fortification vehicles: fortified infant cereal, fortified chicken soup and fortified orange-flavored beverage. Seven years later, Nutrivida has 13 highly nutritious products: two infant cereals, four soups, five drinks, and two spice mixes. Its primary target group is constituted by the people living under the poverty line and especially children between 6 months and 2 years of age (in the 1000-days window). Nutrivida is a social business created thanks to a strategic alliance between the FIFCO and the Yunus Social Business.
Nutrivida has environmentally friendly practices, it measures all its footprints and has the goal to become a “net positive” social business (carbon, water and solid waste positive). Nutrivida is an innovative and financially sustainable answer to hidden hunger in the world.
