The Village Seed (TVS)

The Village Seed (TVS), a women- and locally-led organisation, was established in 2021 in response to a pressing educational disparity observed by its founders, culminating in the formal registration of the non-profit organisation in 2023. The founders recognised a profound gap between early childhood development (ECD) centres in suburban areas and those located in historically disadvantaged townships and rural communities in South Africa. While suburban ECD centres flourished, attracting primarily middle-class families with rich educational offerings—curriculum, interactive games, stimulating activities, well-equipped playgrounds, sports facilities, and nutritious meals—the stark contrast in underprivileged areas was alarming. In low-resource communities, ECD centres often lacked essential learning materials, toys, and even basic infrastructure like water, sanitation, and playgrounds. Teachers frequently struggled with inadequate training and low salaries, and parents faced financial burdens as most are in informal work and are young and single parents, often unable to pay the already minimal school fees. Furthermore, the absence of accommodation for children with disabilities highlighted systemic neglect. With suburban school fees averaging 70 to 100 times higher than those in rural areas, the founders of TVS were compelled to bridge this gap, championing equity and accessibility in early childhood education. Vision Statement Empowering communities with equitable access to quality early childhood education, ensuring a brighter future for every child. Mission Statement To plant the seeds of hope and nurture a future where every child, regardless of their background, has access to quality education and opportunities for holistic development.
