Vinya Weaving Lab
Vinya Weaving Lab is a commuity-rooted social enterprise based in Kilifi Kenya that intergrates traditional African Weaving with systems thinking, regenerative design, and cultural storytelling. Our work is grounded in the belief that weaving is not just a craft but also a methodology for systems change, healing, and community connection. Through immersive workshops, artisan-led collaborations, and thoughtful product creation, we bring together artisans, women's groups, and cultral workers to co-create circular, resilient, and regenerative futures. Vinya emerged from simple beginnings of reselling crafts, and has evolved into a vibrant ecosystem for knowledge transfer, skill-sharing, and sustainable innovation. Today, our work centers on five key focus areas: systems weaving workshops that explore complexity through metaphor and conversation; customization of crafts that apply ancestral techniques to modern design needs; skill transfer programs offering intergenerational training for rural women in Kericho, Kisumu, and Kilifi; regenerative fiber innovation using materials such as sisal, baobab, banana, and pineapple; and practical art expressed through preorder-ready products like our Katemi duffle bag and Muombe backpack. We have led the “Weaving Experience” project as an exhibit with Nairobi Design Week, mapping insights on Kumu and engaging participants in system-level thinking through craft. We've co-designed functona craft for high-end brands that integrates weaving with wood and metal, and we've hosted hybrid workshops on the artisan economy, economic empowerment, and the role of women as cultural knowledge holders. Vinya Weaving Lab has explored five interconnected themes through our practice: honoring women as knowledge holders in craft traditions; supporting the artisan economy through dignified and ethical production; strengthening community networks and solidarity across generations and regions; navigating historical and present-day disruptions to local systems; and imagining regenerative futures that draw from ancestral wisdom while embracing emerging tools and technologies. Our vision is to weave together communities, knowledge systems, and regenerative economies rooted in dignity, creativity, and collective resilience. As we continue to build bioregional artisan hubs and circular systems grounded in local materials, we invite collaboration with others who share our commitment to craft, culture, and sustainability.
