ZimbosAbantu Healthcare on Wheels
ZimbosAbantu Healthcare on Wheels is a social enterprise in Zimbabwe that delivers accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare to marginalized and hard-to-reach communities through solar powered mobile clinics. Our mission is to bridge the healthcare gap by bringing essential medical services directly to people’s doorsteps, ensuring that no one is left behind. Founded on the belief that access to healthcare is a basic right, not a privilege, ZimbosAbantu Healthcare on Wheels was established to address the barriers that prevent vulnerable populations, particularly women, youth, and people living in peri-urban and rural areas, from receiving timely medical care. Our mobile clinics provide primary healthcare, maternal and child services, HIV and NCD screening, medication, and health education. Powered by solar energy, they operate sustainably even in off-grid communities, reducing the walking distance to healthcare access to less than one kilometre for thousands of families. Our vision is to build a resilient, inclusive, and sustainable healthcare system that integrates renewable energy, telemedicine, and community empowerment to transform how healthcare is accessed and delivered across Zimbabwe and beyond. We believe that healthcare goes beyond treatment, it is about restoring dignity, strengthening resilience, and empowering communities to take charge of their well-being. That is why our model combines medical services, health education, and economic empowerment under one holistic approach. Through our Teen Mothers Earn and Live Initiative, we support young mothers with solar powered sewing machines, small business training, and start-up incubators that help them earn a living while funding their health and that of their children. We also collaborate with local women’s groups through community-based projects such as beekeeping, chicken rearing, and solar powered freezers that promote both health and financial independence. In partnership with the National AIDS Council, Swiss Re, Bayer Foundation, and other global partners, ZimbosAbantu has scaled to 11 mobile clinics covering 8 wards in Harare and 2 in Bulawayo, reaching thousands of people who previously had limited or no access to care. We have also launched a monthly health insurance plan called Mukando weHwutano, a community-based health savings model that ensures affordability and sustainability for low-income households. Looking ahead, we plan to expand into all 10 provinces of Zimbabwe and introduce specialized mobile units for maternal care, eye and dental services, and AI powered diagnostics. Our ultimate goal is to create a healthcare ecosystem powered by innovation, compassion, and sustainability, where every person, regardless of location or circumstance, can live a healthy, dignified life. At ZimbosAbantu Healthcare on Wheels, we believe that when health is within reach, hope follows.
