Against the backdrop of recent global geopolitical conflicts, understanding the intricate relationship between gender, conflict, trauma, and their implications for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is paramount. Conflict exacerbates existing gender inequalities and exposes women and marginalized gender identities to heightened risks of violence, displacement, and loss of livelihoods. Furthermore, the trauma inflicted by conflict often extends beyond the duration of hostilities, impacting mental health, social cohesion, and economic stability in affected communities. Also, the trauma inflicted by conflict extends far beyond physical injuries, encompassing psychological and emotional distress, loss of social support networks, and intergenerational agony.
In light of these challenges, addressing gender dynamics in conflict zones and facilitating trauma recovery is imperative not only for achieving SDG 5 (Gender Equality) but also for advancing a range of interconnected goals, including those related to health (SDG 3), education (SDG 4), and peace, justice, and strong institutions (SDG 16). By unpacking the complexities of gender, conflict, and trauma through informed dialogue and interdisciplinary perspectives, this panel aims to shed light on both the challenges and opportunities for fostering resilience, empowerment, and sustainable development in conflict-affected contexts.
