Currently, most, if not all, of dead end plastic waste found are incinerated and landfilled, accelerating the microplastics problem and destroying any sort of value that can be obtained by processing such plastics.
In India, 3-4 million tons of plastic waste is generated, 40% of which gets recycled, the rest enters waterways through landfills and lacks traceability on its handling.
For such non reyclable, dead end plastics – chemical recycling (pyrolysis), or the conversion of such plastics into fuel and sustainable chemicals, is the way forward us .
This session will focus on comprehensively communicating the problem at hand, the types of plastics we deem ‘recyclable and non recyclable’ and how pyrolysis can help us ensure that we productively use landfills as a source of circular fuel along with ways forward for partnerships in this space.
